I can actually go put my foot in my mouth, you are absolutely right, it was Paul Hogan, not Paul Newman...I guess I must have had cool hand Luke on my mind. Appreciate the comment and link...as a fan of baseball, I think it's great that Australian players are finally getting their dues. I hope the message of the post wasn't misunderstood, as I wanted to congratulate Hughes for helping get Australia on the map...it also helps that he's a Twin! Thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated!

And here's a link to the actual feature in the Perth paper today: http://www.watoday.com.au/sport/hughes-overnight-success-a-long-time-coming-20100430-ty44.html. In it he talks of the importance of the Australian clubs he played with as a kid and in the off-seasons since he's turned pro.

The quality of Australian baseball players is good and getting better because of the quality of the junior development programs in Australia. If the Isle of Skye has the same kind of programs they may produce MLB players -- and good luck to them in doing so. Australian talent hasn't "popped up" like some natural phenomenon any more than American talent "pops up" it's nurtured, encouraged, and taught. Well done Luke Hughes and Brad Thomas and Trent Oeltjen and the 25 other Australians who have played MLB and those who will yet do so.
